From Colorado to the Gulf Coast: Speed and Flexibility Fuel KM Service Co.'s Growth

Denver, CO  – KM Service Co. drives its day to day operations on the same principle it was founded on: being ready to go when others are not.

The company started in Colorado specializing in responding to customers who needed fuel in places and at times that were anything but convenient. From remote cell towers to sites tucked back in the mountains, KM Service Co., built its reputation around the ability to get there fast.

“Nimbleness. To be able to get somewhere within hours, or a couple hours’ notice. That’s kind of our cup of tea,” said Kyle Miller owner of KM Service Co.

The company has grown, thanks to that nimbleness, beyond Colorado, into Wyoming, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and as far as Florida and the Gulf Coast.

From the beginning, they’ve kept one product at the center of that responsiveness: the Thunder Creek No HAZMAT Fuel and Service Trailer (MTT).

Cutting the Red Tape

Miller first became interested in the MTT because it could transport fuel without the need for a HAZMAT-endorsed driver.

When he learned about the product he was working for a large civil contractor in Denver and had no plans to become a fuel distributor. After learning more and seeing the trailer in person, he took a leap of faith.

He started delivering fuel shortly after receiving the MTT and as the company grew, that feature that initially caught his eye revealed itself as a key operational advantage.

“Thunder Creek has benefited our operation not only from the simplicity of not having to have a HAZMAT driver, but also from the ability to source fuel easily and not have a big truck to get in,” Miller said.

Delivering on fast response means removing barriers like who can operate the equipment. Miller said the MTT not only makes hiring easier, but also simplifies training, and reduces insurance costs.

Built for a Different Kind of Fuel Delivery

When their work takes them far from traditional bulk fueling infrastructure, the MTT gives Miller’s team another advantage: the ability to easily source fuel along the way.

In emergencies, like when a generator at a cell tower needs fuel after a storm, the priority is getting there quickly to maintain operations.

“There’s times where it’s quicker to swing through a truck stop and fuel quick because there might not be a bulk fuel station for 200 miles,” Miller said.

With the MTT, they are able to respond solely based on the needs of the job versus structuring trips around access to a bulk fuel terminal.

Once they leave the pavement, the demands don’t get any easier.

KM Service Co. fuel trailers have traveled to elevations of 12,000 feet in the mountains, navigating remote locations that are routine for their customers.

“That’s kind of why we’ve stuck with Thunder Creek, is we don’t feel any other brand brings that rigidity where we can do the things we need to do to service our clients and meet our expectations,” Miller said.

The Investment That Paid for Itself

KM Service Co. now operates trailers in Colorado and Illinois with plans to expand as opportunity grows. That expansion has been supported by a strong return on investment.

“We were skeptical at first,” Miller shared. “We weren’t looking to start a fuel distribution business, but we paid off our first trailer within a year. Then we did the same thing with the second one, and the third one was just paid off.”

For KM Service Co., that return goes beyond the initial purchase price. The trailers have helped the company put more drivers in a position to respond, reach customers quickly, expand into new markets, and deliver the level of service on which the business has built its reputation.

As KM Service Co. grows, Miller expects its Thunder Creek fleet to grow with it.

“We want to grow, and get bigger, and provide more service, and be that go-to solution for people when they need us,” Miller said.

For a company that makes its name by answering the call when conditions are at their worst, having equipment that is ready to move isn’t just convenient.

It’s the business model. Back
